The final Big Bear race of the year is upon us already. With one more race in the Cal State calendar (Lake Crapstaic), the season will be over. It has been really sad to see the death of downhill racing in Big Bear, and maybe even more sad to see the impact it's had on the local economy. Not long ago, our little Team Condo Of Death was abuzz with racers, enjoying the location that the Switzerland Chalet offered. Geri at Boulder Creek would sometimes even have to put ME up at the "hotel" units back at Boulder Bay....and it was ME that turned all the DH people onto that place in the beginning!
Sundays' race will be much more akin to the good ol' days, though. With the race starting and ending in the 'Summit parking lot, and trails like 1EO1 and BOTH "Fall Line" trails thrown in for good measure, there is sure to be some last minute lead changes and BLOOD! Fall Line is great, and is WAY under utilized by Team Big Bear's course designers. This trail gives the non-career roadies a rare chance at greatness just before the finish line. Nothing more pleasure inducing than blowing by a guy or two on 6,000 dollar 5" travel trail bikes with a cobby old hard tail with rim brakes. Good times, good times....
Ara "The Fuzz" Movsessian will be coming out of retirement to hit the SINGLESPEED category. This coming just two days after he handed me my ever-expanding-ass during a five mile ascent up Sullivan Canyon. I was holding 10.6 mph up that hill, and he went around me like a straight guy past West Hollywood. Also coming up are King James (defending his top three spot), Bert The Hurt, Vegas Bob, Heidi and Darter, Papo, and even Roger and Vanessa. Just like old times, bodies askew in the condo..Ara and Stakk trying to fart us into the hospital, and us probably forcing Stikkity Stakk to sleep outside on a 20 degree night. This is in response to a snore that sounds like a herd of Hippos dragging steel trash dumpsters over asphalt. I can't wait to get up there, and best of luck to all of you...
P.S. Ryan Nolan and Jeff "Tookie" Williams will also be racing this weekend back East, so wish them luck as well.
